Description
“Drugs: A River of No Return is the
little known first entry in Stelvio
Massi and Gabriele Crisanti's mondo
cycle. In fact, the subsequent three films- Mondo
cane oggi - L'orrore continua, Mondo cane 2000 - L'incredibile, and Sporco mondo, sporca gente (aka Dirty World, Dirty People) - would all not have come about were it not for Drugs, with
Crisanti suggesting to Massi that they head out to Colombia to
shoot a bit of drug footage. What thus started off as an impromptu
week-long trip to grab some drug shots for a single docu, ended up
spanning six months and reportedly amounted to 40,000 meters of
film (though the abundance of footage certainly didn't stop this
incestuous group of mondos from reusing various scenes from one
another).
Originally titled Droga - fiume senza ritorno, Drugs failed to
find domestic distribution in Italy, and was subsequently retitled
twice more to Crack - l'insidia del 2000 and Droga sterco di Dio in
attempts to get the film released. It did find international
distribution, including home video releases in, at least, Greece,
Japan, Hong Kong, and Hispanic territories.
Although it was originally proposed that Drugs be shown in
Italian schools (though that plan was shut down), what's
particularly interesting about this mondo is that it has since
taken on a life of its own in Latin American territories: serving
as a drug education film, for example being shown to school kids in
Colombia and a church group organizing a screening of it in Chile.
